    Recipient of the Biodiversity Law and Governance Global Leadership award by the CISDL in Montreal in 2022 for her commitment to conflict resolution, human rights, and humanitarian work.
    Recipient of the Principal’s Graduate Fellowship award from McGill University in 2009.

  • Maria is an international lawyer with extensive human rights and consultancy field experience with foreign governments and the International Red Cross. She worked in the private sector with a multinational corporation, with insurance and reinsurance brokers, and with a Latin American state oil company. She advised South African local communities pro-bono in an environmental dispute and advised the government of Colombia on the rights of victims of conflict and on transparency in investment disputes. She is versatile to connect local laws and public international law in business and human rights scenarios.

    Maria has a dual legal background in civil and common law, as well as in international law. She holds LLM degrees from the London School of Economics and McGill university, as well as a postgraduate law degree from Pantheon-Assas in Paris, and a law degree from Rosario university in Colombia. 

    Maria qualified in Colombia in 1993 and is now articling with the law firm of Gaertner Baron P.C. She expects to be admitted to the Ontario bar in 2024 and intends to practice in the areas of immigration, human rights and civil litigation.
